Why was I rejected from IIM Ahmedabad despite high CAT percentile and meeting cutoffs?

A high CAT percentile is necessary for IIM Ahmedabad — but it has never been sufficient on its own, and the rejections we've seen across student conversations make this point clearly.

Candidates with 99.9, 99.81, and even 99.94+ percentiles have reported not receiving calls from IIM-A. A non-engineer who cleared all sectional cutoffs at 99.3 percentile was also rejected — and the initial reaction, understandably, was to wonder whether some error had occurred. It hadn't. IIM-A uses a composite scoring system, and CAT percentile is only one input into that calculation.

From what we've tracked, academics carry significant weight in this composite — your Class 10 scores, Class 12 scores, and graduation marks all feed into it. We've seen this perspective shared by experienced professionals advising aspirants: for arts graduates specifically, scoring full marks in the composite academic component may require a graduation score of 8.5 or above. If your academic profile has weaker components, even a near-perfect CAT score doesn't fully compensate.

The GEM (Gender, Engineering, Management diversity) factor is also part of the picture. In our experience, this adds complexity that many aspirants underestimate. A GEM-category candidate with a 99.78 percentile, for instance, reported not receiving calls from either IIM-A or IIM Lucknow — which suggests the composite calculation interacts with profile categories in ways that aren't always intuitive or transparent.

Context matters too. With approximately 3 lakh students taking CAT that year, the density of competition within the 99+ percentile bracket increased substantially, making the shortlisting thresholds harder to predict even for well-prepared candidates.

On the question of transparency in the selection process, the picture that emerges is genuinely mixed. Some experienced voices argue that the lack of clarity around composite scoring makes it difficult for candidates to self-assess accurately — and that this opacity is a legitimate institutional shortcoming. Others counter that standardised composite systems exist precisely to reduce arbitrary decision-making, and that outcomes don't reflect corruption so much as a multi-variable calculation that no single strong score can override.

The practical takeaway: if IIM-A is your goal, your preparation should span CAT percentile, academic score optimisation awareness, and a realistic read of your composite profile — not just cutoff clearing. Candidates in this situation have gone on to strong outcomes at SPJIMR, FMS, and other IIMs, and in our experience, those paths have delivered excellent careers in their own right.
