Is ISB (Indian School of Business) genuinely a top MBA program or is it overrated due to marketing and inflated rankings?
ISB's credibility as a premium MBA institution is a genuinely contested question — and one worth examining carefully rather than dismissing from either direction. The picture that emerges from experienced professionals, current students, and alumni is more nuanced than either the harshest critics or the most vocal defenders suggest.
On placements and transparency
The most specific data point we've seen cited by current students: approximately 42 out of 800 students (roughly 5%) remained unplaced in a recent cycle, with some reportedly opting out voluntarily. Placement reports are audited by EY, which is a meaningful accountability mechanism. On quality of outcomes, 70+ MBB placements — reportedly exceeding IIM A and B combined — and 20+ VC/PE/IB roles in a single year are numbers that, if they hold up to scrutiny, represent genuine outcomes. We'd always recommend verifying these through direct LinkedIn outreach to recent alumni rather than relying on any single source, including institutional reports.
On the rankings question
The FT ranking methodology goes a long way toward explaining ISB's seemingly anomalous position — ranked around #10 globally in certain years, ahead of programs with far longer legacies. FT compares only programs with experienced student cohorts, and ISB's relatively lower pre-MBA salaries mean percentage salary jumps appear dramatically higher, which inflates career outcome scores. This isn't necessarily manipulation — it's a structural feature of how the methodology interacts with Indian salary baselines. Aspirants should understand what the ranking is actually measuring before drawing conclusions either way.
On accreditation
ISB holds triple accreditation — AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA — and has deliberately chosen not to seek UGC recognition in order to preserve pedagogical independence. This is a defensible position aligned with how several internationally-oriented institutions operate, though it does mean ISB graduates face specific constraints in government roles or further academic pathways that require UGC-recognised degrees. That trade-off is real and worth factoring in depending on your post-MBA goals.
On finance placements specifically
There's genuine disagreement here about what counts as "top-tier." Critics point to the absence of certain marquee names — Blackstone, Goldman Sachs in front-office roles — while supporters cite Barclays, Nomura, DC Advisory, and Premji Invest as legitimate and competitive placements. Both perspectives carry weight. In our experience, the more important clarification is this: top PE and VC roles in India hire predominantly through internships and network-based processes, not campus drives. Measuring ISB's finance outcomes purely through campus placement data therefore understates the actual finance penetration among alumni.
On CV vetting concerns
With an average cohort work experience of 4–5 years, the feasibility of vetting every claim differs structurally from a two-year post-undergraduate program. The counterpoint worth noting: IIM CV vetting also relies primarily on employer confirmation emails, which are not impossible to game, and most internationally accredited business schools don't mandate third-party vetting either. This doesn't make the concern invalid, but it does suggest the issue is broader than ISB specifically.
Our overall read
ISB is neither the unambiguously world-class institution its marketing sometimes implies, nor a hollow credential propped up entirely by rankings manipulation. It is a genuinely strong program for specific profiles and goals — particularly for those with 4–6 years of work experience targeting consulting, certain technology leadership roles, or general management in multinational environments. For core investment banking front-office or certain government-adjacent careers, the picture is more complicated. The 5% unplaced figure, if accurate, is a real number — higher than some peer institutions, but not alarming by global standards. What matters most is whether ISB's specific outcomes map to your specific goals, and the only reliable way to assess that is through direct conversations with alumni in roles you're actually targeting.
