Why would someone already studying at IIM Calcutta take the CAT exam again?

freshernegativeexam integritymotivation analysispercentile normalization

Taking the CAT again after securing a seat at IIM Calcutta is an unusual choice — and when a case like this surfaces (specifically involving a K.J. Somaiya Engineering graduate already enrolled at IIM Calcutta who reportedly retook the exam citing "intellectual challenge"), the reactions from the broader aspirant community tend to be pointed.

The skepticism is largely justified. The perspective we've seen most consistently from experienced professionals and serious aspirants is this: if genuine intellectual stimulation is the goal, an IIM Calcutta student has access to far richer challenges — from advanced problem sets in physics (Irodov-level work, quantum mechanics) to the demands of the programme itself. Retaking an exam you've already mastered doesn't constitute intellectual challenge in any meaningful sense.

A separate motivation that comes up frequently in aspirant conversations — and is worth taking seriously — is coaching institute credibility. It's a well-documented pattern that CAT coaching instructors take the exam annually to maintain or refresh their 99.9+ percentile credentials. Multiple 100 percentile scores become a marketing asset. From what we've tracked, this is a plausible explanation in cases where the stated reasoning doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny.

There's also a systemic concern worth raising. High-performing repeat test-takers affect exam normalization in ways that matter to first-time aspirants. The mechanics are straightforward: if a 110-mark score anchors the 100 percentile slot and established scorers participate, someone genuinely achieving 109 marks may receive a lower percentile than their performance would otherwise warrant. That compression has real consequences for aspirants at the margins.

A counterpoint does exist here, and we think it deserves fair representation: if a repeat test-taker doesn't ultimately accept an IIM seat, the offer simply flows to the next eligible candidate, leaving placement outcomes technically unaffected. That's a reasonable argument. But there's a softer cost that's harder to dismiss — achieving 100 percentile carries weight precisely because of the competition. When that field includes people for whom the exam is effectively already a solved problem, the validation it represents becomes genuinely diluted for those who needed every bit of their preparation to get there.

What makes this particular case more grounded than speculation is that observable professional outcomes were also part of the picture. A look at the student's LinkedIn reportedly revealed summer internship performance that was notably below typical IIM Calcutta standards — which reframes the "intellectual pursuit" framing considerably. The gap between the stated motivation and the demonstrated outcomes points less toward intellectual curiosity and more toward something closer to credential-stacking or validation-seeking.

The picture that emerges is one of near-universal skepticism about the stated motivation. Retaking the CAT from within an IIM seat doesn't serve the aspirant ecosystem, offers no clear societal benefit, and in subtle but real ways, chips away at the exam's integrity as a level playing field.
