What is the reality of placements and ROI at Tier 2 MBA colleges like IMI Delhi?

mixednegativeplacementsROIsalary expectations

The picture that emerges from IMI Delhi alumni conversations is a candid one — and worth taking seriously if you're weighing a Tier 2 MBA.

An IMI Delhi alumnus with a profile of 8/9/8 and 93+ percentile offered a pointed critique of the gap between marketed and actual outcomes. His central claim: while IMI's website advertises ₹16 LPA average placements, the on-ground reality is closer to ₹10 LPA, with some students receiving offers as low as ₹5–6.8 LPA — even those with prior work experience. Against fees totalling ₹30+ lakhs over two years, that's an ROI that deserves scrutiny, not blind faith.

The critique extended beyond placements. Infrastructure was described as basic — minimal sports facilities, an underground gym, small hostel rooms. Only 2–3 faculty members were considered genuinely competent. On internships, the picture was sharper: 20–30 students in a batch ended up self-sponsoring unpaid internships, and some companies have reportedly blacklisted IMI due to concerns around candidate quality. These are uncomfortable data points, but we think aspirants deserve to hear them before signing on the dotted line.

That said, we've seen this perspective challenged — and the counterarguments have some weight too.

A current IMI student disputed the floor-level numbers, noting that peers who cleared CFA Level 1 typically secured ₹10–11 LPA or above, and that in their batch, no one received below ₹10–11 LPA. A recruiter with 10+ years of hiring experience pushed back on what they called 'sour grapes' reasoning — pointing out that IMI is well-regarded in certain hiring circles, and that placement struggles at this level are often industry-wide, not college-specific. Both perspectives are worth holding simultaneously.

The alumnus himself acknowledged a nuance we've consistently seen across student conversations: outcomes at Tier 2 institutions depend heavily on individual effort, proactive networking, and frankly, some luck. The college brand opens some doors — it doesn't walk you through them.

On where IMI fits in the Tier 2 hierarchy, the ranking that emerged was: XIMB, Tier 2 IIMs, and Tier 2 IITs at the top of the consideration set, with IRMA as a strong niche option. IMI, FORE, and GLIM were positioned as last resorts rather than aspirational targets. From an SIBM Pune alumni perspective, a useful caveat was added: even colleges that rank higher in this tier face real placement headwinds — the challenges aren't unique to IMI.

For aspirants sitting in the 85–92 CAT percentile range, the consistent advice we've tracked is this: retake the exam rather than settle. The delta in outcomes between Tier 1 and Tier 2 — in brand, salary floor, and recruiter access — is significant enough to justify another attempt.

The broader takeaway: if you do enter a Tier 2 programme, go in with your eyes open. The college infrastructure alone will not guarantee outcomes. Self-directed networking, skill-building (certifications, live projects, corporate outreach) and relentless initiative are what separate students who thrive from those who don't — regardless of the campus they're on.
