What is campus life, placements, and career prospects like at XLRI Delhi compared to XLRI Jamshedpur?

mixedpositivecampus life comparisonplacement statisticsconsulting recruiting

An XLRI Delhi alumnus who converted multiple top B-school offers — including XLRI Delhi BM, IIM Kozhikode, MDI, and IIFT — shared extensive, ground-level insights into how the Delhi campus compares to Jamshedpur across placements, campus life, and career trajectory. Here's what the picture looks like when you put it all together.

On Placements

Placements are joint across both XLRI campuses — Delhi and Jamshedpur — and the differences in average and median packages are, in practice, negligible. From what we've tracked, the variance sits at roughly 1–2 lakh at the bottom 5–10% of the Delhi batch, and that delta is shrinking year-over-year as Delhi alumni build their industry track record and SIP cohorts strengthen recruiter confidence in the campus.

On Recruiter Behaviour

One point worth addressing directly: recruiters do know which campus a student is from. The idea of an "honour code" around this is more myth than reality. Historically, Bain and McKinsey were the two firms that did not recruit from Delhi — though McKinsey opened CV calls from the Delhi campus from 2023 onwards. Beyond that exception, FMCG, consulting, and general management roles are well-represented at Delhi. In our experience, we've seen this perspective corroborated by alumni in the field — including one XLRI Delhi alumna who converted a BCG offer, which underscores that the ceiling is not as low as some applicants assume.

On Campus Life

The Delhi campus comes out ahead on infrastructure. Hostel rooms are single-occupancy, air-conditioned, and come with personal balconies — noticeably newer than what Jamshedpur currently offers. Shared washrooms serve approximately 10–12 commodes per roughly 80 students per floor, which is a fair trade-off given the overall quality of the setup. Clubs are largely cross-campus and equally active at both locations, so there's no meaningful disadvantage there.

Socially, the smaller batch size and single hostel building in Delhi tend to create stronger senior-junior bonds than what Jamshedpur typically produces — a nuance we've seen come up repeatedly in conversations with students from both campuses. The trade-off is mobility: juniors face travel restrictions until their Summer Internship Program begins. Post-SIP, weekend shuttles run to Gurgaon, approximately one hour away, though attendance is optional and varies considerably by individual preference.

On HR and Career Mobility

For those considering the BM (Business Management) programme at Delhi and wondering about HR pigeonholing — the picture is more balanced than the reputation suggests. HR at XLRI is not female-dominated, and while the domain does carry some structural constraints, approximately 15–20% of HR graduates transition organically into non-HR roles over time. That said, from what we've seen across student conversations with working professionals, it's worth approaching this less as a strategy and more as an organic outcome — the B-school experience carries its own unpredictability, and planning rigidly around a pivot can work against you.

The Bottom Line

XLRI Delhi is broadly comparable to Jamshedpur on placements, and modestly ahead on campus amenities. Jamshedpur still holds a marginal preference among a subset of recruiters — but that gap is narrowing in a way that's measurable, not just anecdotal. If you're evaluating the two, the decision increasingly comes down to personal fit, preferred city proximity, and programme specifics rather than any significant structural gap in outcomes.
