Why Your Profile Sits in the Middle Tier

The 8/9/8 combination reads as: strong Class 12, weak graduation, strong Class 10.

IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore penalize the low graduation score (around 8.0 on a 10-point scale) heavily in their Academic Score calculations.

IIM Bangalore's PGPBA formula assigns roughly 20-25 points to academics, and a graduation score of 8.0 will cost you 3-5 points compared to a 9-pointer. BHU is a reputed central university, which adds mild legitimacy, but it does not carry the IIT or NIT brand weight that some shortlisting models reward.

General Male is the most competitive category in every BLACKI process. You compete against engineers from premier institutes, many with 9.5+ graduation GPAs. Commerce backgrounds are not penalized, but you will be evaluated against a pool that statistically skews higher on academic scores.

IIM Lucknow and Kozhikode are slightly more forgiving, with shortlists extending to 97-97.5 for strong academic and extracurricular combinations.

IIM Indore, which uses a composite shortlisting score, has called candidates at 96.5 with compensation from strong academics elsewhere, but that was the exception in 2023-24, not the rule.

The honest number: 98.5 percentile gives you a realistic shot at three to four BLACKI institutes. Below 97.5, you are banking on Kozhikode and Indore alone.

Where Extracurriculars Actually Matter

Your decent extracurriculars become relevant only after you clear the shortlist cutoff. At the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview stage, leadership roles, internships, and any research work from BHU will differentiate you.

McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and HUL recruit from BLACKI campuses, and interviewers from these firms tend to probe commerce graduates on financial modeling, market sizing, and domain knowledge. Preparing that story is worth doing, but only after you secure the call.

Do not invest interview-prep bandwidth at the cost of CAT score improvement. The shortlist gate is binary.

What You Should Do Differently

Treat 99 percentile as the goal and 98 as the minimum acceptable outcome. A single percentile point in the 97-99 range shifts your expected shortlists dramatically.

Focus VARC if your commerce background already gives you Quant confidence. BHU students often underestimate VARC's weight in the final scaled score, especially for IIM Ahmedabad, where VARC performance in the interview prep also shows up in your reading comprehension during GD-PI.

Also apply to IIM Shillong, IIFT, and MDI Gurgaon as parallel targets. IIFT in particular suits commerce graduates, and its 2024 median salary touched ₹28.5 LPA with firms like Aditya Birla Group and Tata Steel recruiting heavily.

This path is narrow for your profile. Don't pretend otherwise. Hit 98.5 and the story changes completely.
