Why are 99-percentilers without strong academics described as "the new untouchables"?
The "new untouchables" label is blunt but accurate: a 99+ CAT percentile with weak academics (a 10th, 12th, or graduation score below roughly 75-80%) and a General-Male-Engineer (GEM) profile will get zero calls from IIM A, B, C, K, L, and I despite outscoring thousands of candidates who do get shortlisted. This is not a ranking glitch.
It is the formula working exactly as designed.
Why the Formula Punishes This Profile
Every BLACKI IIM uses a composite scoring system that blends CAT score, academic percentages, work experience, and diversity factors before issuing shortlist calls. At IIM Ahmedabad, academics and profile together contribute enough weight that a 9/9/8 profile (SSC/HSC/graduation) in the GEM pool requires a near-perfect CAT to even reach the interview pile. The GEM pool is the largest, most competitive bucket, and IIMs explicitly cap diversity-correction benefits for this group. A 99.8 percentile with 72% in graduation can lose to a 99.4 percentile with 88% in graduation, every time.
The Numbers That Define the Problem

These are floors, not guarantees. If your academics sit below these bands, the composite score drops you out of the shortlist regardless of your CAT number.
Where This Profile Actually Converts
The candidate community calls these profiles "untouchables" at BLACKI, but several strong schools weight academics far less aggressively:
- XLRI Jamshedpur (BM): focuses heavily on XAT score and interview performance
- FMS Delhi: small batch, but CAT-heavy shortlisting with lighter academic weight
- MDI Gurgaon: composite score friendlier to strong CAT with moderate academics
- IIT Bombay SJMSOM: technical background is a genuine advantage here
- IIM CAP cluster (Udaipur, Trichy, Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur, Kashipur): academic weight is present but the GEM competition is thinner
IIFT New Delhi is also worth targeting. Its own exam scores dominate shortlisting, and a strong IIFT score can override moderate graduation marks entirely.
What Actually Moves the Needle
This is hard. Don't pretend otherwise.
One year of quality work experience before applying raises your composite score at IIM A, B, and L because work experience gets a separate additive component in their formulas. It does not erase weak academics, but it narrows the gap enough to occasionally produce a call at IIM L or IIM K.
The candidates who crack BLACKI from this profile cluster almost always have either a 10th and 12th above 90% (partially compensating for graduation), a non-engineering background, or are female, which shifts the diversity calculation entirely.
If you are currently in this cluster, your energy is better spent dominating the XLRI, FMS, and MDI interview process than chasing a BLACKI shortlist that the math does not support this cycle.
Pro Tip: Before applying, run your composite score through each IIM's publicly available shortlisting formula (IIM B and IIM K publish theirs explicitly) so you can see exactly how many points your academics cost you, and target only those schools where your CAT score can realistically compensate.
